Life Without Obtaining A College Degree - 932 Words

In this day and age it has become increasingly more difficult to live a successful life without obtaining a college degree. Universities know this and over the years have turned the almost mandatory act of getting a degree into an expensive procedure, forcing many to take out loans and become overwhelmed with debt. They realize the demand for higher education and use it to their advantage, selling their â€Å"product† without any regard for the welfare of their â€Å"customer†. Yes, product and customer are the right choice of words, for Colleges and Universities alike have corporatized higher education. The price to attend College hasn’t always been as astronomically high as it is today, in fact Nicolaus Mills, a Harvard graduate and current professor of American Studies at Sarah Lawrence College, wrote about the rise in tuition prices. Stating that in 2003 only two Universities charged over $40,000 and only six years later that number rose to over 200 colleges and Universities. He attributes the rise to our poor economic growth, but when the economy bounces back colleges will do everything but roll back their prices (Mills). Over those years state governments cut subsidies for public colleges and universities, which in turn led institutions to raise tuition, instead of cutting back on spending. Schools stay up to date with all the latest luxuries and the newest equipment, but fail to improve on their academic sector, only focusing on the flashiness of their campus.
